Protestant Cay Beach

Northside, St. Croix

The beach at Protestant Cay is one of the coolest beaches in all of the USVI. The cay is located within the Christainsted harbor, just a couple hundred feet from the boardwalk making it the closest beach to downtown Christainsted. It's really cool to be able to see the beach within swimming distance, but don't worry you won't have to swim to get there. Adjacent to the King Christain Hotel there is a free shuttle service that runs 24 hours a day which will take you over to the dock on the island (just make sure to tip the captain). Once at the cay you're free to walk around the property including enjoying the beach and swimming in the water, just make sure to heed all the private property signs as some parts of the island are for guests of the hotel only.

Protestant Cay is currently the home of the Hotel on the Cay; a unique place to stay if you're looking to be in town. The hotel brings with it some amenities like a number of chairs on the beach for your use as well as a nice bar and restaurant right on the sand. Protestant Cay also has a unique history, which you may have guessed at due to it's interesting name. Back during the French colonial rule over St. Croix (1625 - 1733) the Catholics and Protestants weren't getting along. When a Protestant (who were much smaller in number that Catholics) passed away they were not allowed to be buried on the main land. Thus they were buried on the Cay giving it the name it has today.
