Mermaid's Chair (St. John) Beach

North Shore, St. John

Like a beach out of Pirates of the Carribean, Mermaid's Chair appears and disappears with the tides. It is a small pocket beach surrounded by dramatic, high rocky cliffs where the incoming tide slowly starts to make it disappear. In order to see this beach you need to time it right to arrive at low tide so you can see it in it's full magnificence. If you do, you'll be able to pretend you're a mermaid who is stopping by on a small private beach to take pictures 🧜‍♀️!

Getting to Mermaid's Chair is easy as long as you get the tides right. Starting at Oppenheimer / Gibney beach swim along the right side of Hawksnest Bay until you get to the first rock outcropping. From the beach this roughly right before the rocky looking beach starts. You won't see anything until you swim past the rocks where upon you'll see the dramatic scene! A small white sand beach with cliffs stacked on all three sides. Some locals call it rope beach because if you try to get to the beach from the road up above, you'll be wishing you had a rope when you get there!
